macbook ram upgrade...

i'm looking into upgrading the ram on my macbook, but i'm not sure how much to get, and the performance hits or enhancements that go along with it...

so... i can get 2x 512 DDR2 SODIMs for roughly £60-70. this is the more affordable option oviously. or i can get 2x 1gigs for £120-130... which is quite a bit more. but is the performance enhancement worth it?

You'll never regret having "too much" RAM. Especially with Rosetta. Go with the 2gigs, as it will help everything run more smoothly.

The RAM for the Intel Chipset runs best when installed in Pairs.
What ever you do make sure its a paired set. 2 GB would be the best option if your runninig anything in Rosetta.

Also don't forget that its not your run of the mill DDR2 SODIMM, its PC2-5300 which runs at 667 mhz.

Paired RAM provides only a marginal improvement. If you can afford 2GB, then, yes, that's best. But buying one 1GB stick and bumping RAM to 1.25 GB will, overall, be better than buying two 512MB sticks and going to 1GB.

I got my memory from Omni Technologies. They were the cheapest I found... but that is not the reason I purchased from them. When I called them I talked to a real person right off the bat and they were super helpful and they have a good return policy. The link I provided says it is ram for the MBP, but the MB used the same stuff.

So far the memory I've installed is working without a glitch. The only thing is when you install it you have to push it in really, really hard to make it click in, the guy on the phone said they were finding this was the case for most people. I cost me about $155 to max out the memory... a far cry from the $500 apple is charging (highway robbery!). Hope this helps!

Go with 2GB - it's worth the added cost. I have 1GB and I quite frequently use nearly all of it, and I'm not gaming or doing graphic design.

Regarding the post above me: Does anyone know the latencies of Omni's DDR2 laptop RAM? I'm considering upgrading myself but from my experiences with desktop PCs cheap RAM is usually low-priced for a reason.
