Macbook: Replacement Smudge Problem...Problem (Chipping panel?)

My apologies if this has already been addressed. I got a white macbook when it first came out and of course it had the infamous "smudge problem". Within two weeks it had a weird yellowing discoloration around the mouse pad, etc.

Anyways, I took it into the apple store and they replaced the bottom panel where the mouse pad was.

This past week I noticed on the bottom end of this panel (down where the mouse pad is) there seems to be some separation. IE. the thin lining in between the panel and the base are starting to chip off. In fact, I'd say there are now two 1.5 inch chips. One of which fell off.

Has anyone had this with macbooks they had "fixed" of the smudge problem? I am hoping I can go into the store and say because of their replacement this thing happened and that I will be covered.

I've had the same issue. I took my MacBook in because the bottom panel was lifting from the shell/casing only a few months after I bought it. I got it back, and didn't realize that the left side was chipped, about an inch long. I don't know if this is because of the panel, the side of the casing isn't screwed tight (also when I got it back from service), or because of the shop I took it to (Apple Authorized). Have you heard of anyone else who's had this issue? Were you able to have it fixed? I'm planning on taking my computer in this month, so I guess we'll see what they say!

I believe this chipping issue is something that happens with the first gen MBs. Something about the magnets being to strong and all other sorts of theorizing, but we can only guess. Apple will replace the offending casing for you (AppleCare or warrantee).

You can stay on top of the yellow discolouration by cleaning your MacBook with isopropanol (also known as propan-2-ol or isoamyl-alcohol). I clean mine about once a week and it's still beautifully white. It's quite easy to get hold of....although I steal mine from work! It works great on getting greasy finger prints of the screen (my wife just has to point at things) and is also great at cleaning bathroom tiles (saw it on a DIY show).

It's an alcohol...so be sure to turn your MacBook off before using it and don't leave it next to cooker!
