Everytime i shut the lid of my week old(!) macbook it restarts itself. Many forums have said you need to keep it still and wait till the light pulsates, but that isn't the case. It also seems like the dvd drive is making more of a noise than normal - it sounds like its trying to eject a disk.
any help would be aprreciated! thanks!

If it's only a week old, I'd give Apple a call to see what they say.

The same thing happens on my MBP and I just bought it last week. After it restarts do you get a message saying, "Mac OSX had to quit unexpectedly?" It's actually quite annoying and I can't figure out why this happens. I'd try running disk drive repair and the apple hardware test, though I did both of those and no problems were found apparently.
