So, any thoughts when the Macbook will be updated to follow in the MPS's footsteps??
I hope to buy an apple laptop this summer for college in October. Any chance of getting an evenly-lit-economical LED display and a Santa Rosa platform so it will have the GMA X3100, which i hear is much more capable than the current GMA 950?

I would love to but the MBP, but there's no way I could possibly afford it...:(
Buying a Macbook here, in Ireland, would cost about $400 extra over the prices in the US and I'm gonna be over there during the summer, so i really want to save money by buying the laptop there.

Somebody willing to offer any guidance?

Thanks

The MB has just received an update. So at least we won't LED on the MBs for the next 6 months.

It is difficult to be certain. But if you need it now, buy the current MB, they are great.

Wow...possibly not until January?? November is bad enough...:(

Well, i possibly don't need the X3100, but i occasionally play games and if I ever decide to run Vista on it, it will be to check out the eye candy with Aero and Glass and that stuff. I hear the X3100 has better support for that.

I don't like how Apple are so considerate of their other products...they should just release updates when they're ready for the market, not when they feel it won't interfere with other product lines.

...and yes, i know that it's probably better for business the way they do it...

But I want it now! :)

I bought my BlackBook 3 weeks ago, its an amazing machine. I don't see why you cant use this generation for what you do. The GMA950 is not that bad of a card. I can play 3D Games on it... I don't get the best framrates but they are still playable. If this gen doesn't cut it, Im guessing the next update will happen next January at MacWorld.

Im with the others. The Macbook (Pro) were both updated around 7 months ago, so, going on that guideline, it will most likely be January. However, around then should be the release of Intels next generation processor which utilises SR so much more..

A refresh of the Santa Rosa platform scheduled for release in late 2007[8] will upgrade Centrino to the 45nm Penryn Processor.

If I remember correctly, that report saying apple ordered 13.3'' LED screens said the order was targeted for Q3 2007, so I'm guessing we'll see Santa Rosa/LED Macbooks in October after the back to school promo ends.

Ok. I have no doubt that its not a brilliant machine, I just want it to be as future-proof as possible. It's a big investment for me, and it will be the first laptop i've bought myself.
I was using my dad's Dell D620 earlier with the GMA 950 and it handles most of Beryl eye candy, running Ubuntu from the LiveCD, very smoothly. It only had a Core Duo processor and 1gb of RAM, so your Macbook would probably do even better. Since the update seems so far away I might just go for a Macbook. I think that I'd be very disappointed if it was updated before the end of the summer though...

Thank you...you have just made the whole decision so much harder... ;)
I was reading about Penryn not too long ago, do you think that when Apple update the Macbook line they will skip the Merom Santa Rosa chips and go straight to the Santa Rosa chipsets with Peryn processors included?
Are the advantages of Peryn over the current processor lines clear yet?

Thanks

I am predicting that Apple is going to update the MacBooks next with Penryn not Santa Rosa Merom. Well, Penryn is going to be 45nm, run cooler and will introduce SSE4 and DDR3 memory. I am predicting the MacBooks will get the Penryn update at or after MacWorld 2008.

Your not gunna get an updated Macbook before school :(.

This gen is perfectly fine though, once you upgrade the RAM it flyss.

Given Apple's history, it seems more likely to me that the next update for the MacBook will be Merom version of Santa Rosa platform, and around the same time the MBP will move to the Penryn version of SR.

I wouldn't be surprised if the MacBook update happened during the early part of the Christmas season, with the MBP upgrade following in January.

there is no such thing as future-proof ;)

i've had my macbook for over a year now (i got it in May 2006), and not once have i felt the need to buy a newer model. The 1.83 GHz CD chip is still more than fast enough for what i need. Sure, if someone gave me a 2.16 GHz BlackBook, i'd use that, but only to satisfy my psychological ePeen. I doubt it would change my workflow in the real world.

And everyone also thought the Macbook was going to get SR/Merom in this update. Next Macbook update will essentially be what the MBPs just got last week. MBPs will see the Penryn update first (Feb or March 08).

Vista Aero/glass runs fine on my windows machine with a 945. (1.2Ghz Core Duo, 1GB ram)

Have you got an ultra-portable or something? At 1.2Ghz, I guess it must be an ULV chip... What laptop is it? How do you find the smaller screen? If i'm right in presuming....

Get the hottest out-of-the-stove offerings from Dell

After Apple i possibly would go for Dell, but the one i would buy is quite expensive when compared to the Macbook, even though the specs are similar. Only differences would be in screen size and resolution. Also, Dells just don't have the visual appeal or clean design/build qualities found in Apple portables... :D
I don't think i would be able to pick one up in the US anyway, without a valid address, since i'll only be there for a month, and they don't have any retail outlets.

Yes...actually, I think you're possibly right, i doubt that Apple will go ahead with the Penryn chip in the Macbook without already having updated the MBPs with it already... It seems that the chances of an updated Macbook are getting slimmer and slimmer, well, not within the next 8-12 months anyway :(

I have this same model with 1 gb of RAM and it flies. :D More computer than I need.
