macbook, screen spanning dvi to vga

hello troops,

recently made the switch to mac and so far im loving it. takes a little to get used to but everything is going good at the mo.

i just bought mini dvi - vga adapter to have screen spanning with my dell monitor (crt). on connecting the monitor and viewing the display options it;

1. lists the dell display in dropdown from the menu
2. lists 3 resolutions 1280*1024 75hz, 1600*1200 60hz, 1600*1200 75hz


the dell monitor is flashing super fast and it says check the signal cable. but i have everything connected fine and securely. when i move my mouse off screen it does seem to 'go away' on to the other screen.

ive tried all resolutions including changing the res of my mac.

anyone got any ideas?

Do you know what model monitor it is? It should be on the back of the monitor.

D1025HE according to the drop down on the mac... confirmed that from the bac of the monitor

exactly the same problem...

i have exactly the same problem:

new macbook (C2D), miniDVI to VGA, DELL D1025HE crt monitor

what ever refresh rate/ color/ resolutions combo i choose, it will show garbled/flickering screen with for the first few moments an on-screen-display window saying "CHECK THE SIGNAL CABLE"

can anyone help me?

ive found my screen to do that occasionally when switching things, turning it off and then on during this will resolve it usually.

That kind of behavior typically indicates that the monitor is being fed a signal that is out of its sync range (refresh rate -- the 75 Hz you see in your display prefs). If you look at the specs for your monitor, it indicates it can only do 60Hz at such a high resolution (1600x1200), although 75 Hz on 1280x1024 is supposed to work.

I've never used a Mac with a CRT, but I expect you are able to manually set the refresh rate. I'm not clear if you tried that, or if you meant you just tried all the presets. Try setting it to 70 Hz or 65 Hz, at 1280x1024, and see what happens.
