I have a friend with a white Macbook that recently froze randomly and then dies. When you start up, it can't find a bootable folder, you can't use the installer from the restore disk, and you can't use hardware diagnosticsit says that it's incompatible with this machine. Tech Tool Deluxe permanently stalls in 'scanning volumes' and it boots into target disk mode but you can't mount its drive from another mac. My guess is that it's the HDD, but I can't be sure. Tech Tool Deluxe et. al. are responsive, and menus work and all that but don't functionally get anywhere.
Apple Support has agreed taht it's probably the HD and I'm going to try to get it to an Apple Store, but in the meantime, I have external Firewire/USB Drives and an iPod. I can't seem to install Mac Os X onto them, but I do want to try booting from an external drive as a final check.
Any analyses and, more importantly, any advice about setting up and subsequently booting from an external drive?
