Very strange... I have a new(er) MacBook 2.0 C2D. It's always taken 10-15 seconds to sleep - no matter what was running, uptime, etc. Then yesterday I installed BitTorrent, started to download a file, it was so slow I cancelled the download and quit BT. (I also was running Aquisition at the same time.) Then the computer was very unresponsive and lots of disk access. So I tried restarted from the Apple menu. Nothing happened - it just stayed on and at the desktop. Tried again - same thing. Then again and again. Finally it restarted, I logged in, things seemed to have responded strange, like in Safari after going to a site I was unable to type in the address bar. etc. So, I restarted again. Now computer seems to function as normal - EXCEPT... when I tell it to sleep it sleeps within 1 second, whereas before it was nearly 15 seconds to sleep.

Any ideas why such odd behavior??? Did BitTorrent screw something up?

I don't know about the bittorrent issue but I can tell you, it should NEVER take 15 seconds to put your mac to sleep. The 1-5 seconds is really the norm. So whatever you did, which sounds like may have had some os conflicts that finally cleared on the multiple restarts, you fixed it.

Hmm, weird, cuz I've had the thing for almost a year now and have done many restarts. Hmmm

The things I'm aware of that impact sleep time...

- Whether you're connected to WiFi and what security standard the WiFi uses (with WPA being particularly slow)

- Safesleep status

- Whether you're using apps that hook into the sleep onset and try to do something (i.e. having Adium logged in will slow sleep slightly while Adium tries to log itself out, I think).

There are maybe a small handful of others.

The one that jumps out is Safesleep. It's possible your sleep image file or its permissions became corrupted, and as a result, OS X is not able to write to it, and so it cancels its attempt to write a sleep image. That would reduce sleep onset time significantly.

Its should take more than a few seconds then. Looks like your safesleep has stopped working. You can test this by removing and then reinserting the battery while the laptop is asleep. If it reboots, you didn't safesleep. If it just reawakens (albeit slowly), then you just have a VERY fast sleep.

You know, I need to make a correction, because I have a macbook pro. It takes about 5 seconds on my mbp. Not sure how longs it should take on the macbook. Maybe that is the norm.

Open Terminal and type the following

pmset -g | grep hibernatemode

It should respond with "hibernatemode n" where n is a number.
