I have noticed that my Macbook speakers sound muted compared to my 12" iBook.

The Macbook speakers are located at the back of the laptop not at the front of the keyboard like previous Apple laptops.

When the Macbook LCD display is opened the hinge is blocking the speakers.

Even when I turn up the volume to highest settings on my Macbook the sound does not sound loud enough.

Does anybody else have this issue where the Macbook volume is not loud enough?

i've used macbooks lots....the speakers just plain suck. and btw..the ibook speakers are just as bad..i own one. i don't know what to say. Apple just doesn't equip the notebooks with great speakers. I personally think they should go pop in those cheap altec lansings like on the cheap hp notebooks...but thats just me. :)

My speakers were terrible. I would just order a nice pair of Bose speakers or some Grado headphones.

This isn't entirely accurate... when the LCD is opened, the hinge bounces the sound up to where your ears are. Otherwise, the sound waves would travel out the back of your computer and get lost somewhere farther back on your desk.

i think this is a software issue rather than hardware.
try listening to the macbook in bootcamp!
still they're pretty crap speakers: just plug it into your hifi.

FWIW, every laptop I've ever owned (I've owned 6 so far - only the latest one is a Mac) has had lousy speakers, to varying degrees. You're just not going to get dolby sound out of a pair of speakers intended to fit in an extremely small form factor. And you'll find that the less sucky speakers are found on the huge, thick "desktop replacement" multimedia laptops that easily dwarf the size of the MB and MBP.

toshiba makes laptops w/ good speakers, why can't apple. Also, the difference between using vlc player and quicktime is very large when listening on full volume. Part of it might be software
