I've got a 13" MacBook.

I was working on Illustrator and listening to music. I completely quit all programs and ejected the CD I had been listening to. Then I shut down my MacBook. An hour later I returned to the computer and pushed the power button. The display comes on, however the computer is not making it's usual bwaaaaah ding noise. The display starts as white and then slowly bars of color come forward. They are very faint and then the bars becomes rather opaque.

I can't use the mouse and no icons appear on the desktop, just these colored bars. Any ideas or suggestions?

My roommate tried removing the battery and replacing it but this did nothing.

Reset PMU.

1. Shut down laptop and remove the AC-Adapter.
2. Remove battery.
3. Press and Hold the Power button for more than 5 seconds, then release.
4. Re-insert battery.
5. Re-connect AC-Adapter and Press Power Button.

This should work in theory. However if its not a PM issue and some other logic board failure then probably just go to an Apple retailer. They'll play around with it and then replace it for you if its standard configuration.

I had a similar problem, I think, with the screen filling with fine coloured vertical lines on a white background and nothing else happens. If it is, it seems to be something to do with the 10.4.7 upgrade. Temporary fix is to do a PRAM reboot (hold down option, apple, p & r keys on powering up and keep holding until second boot chime occurs). A permanent fix is to startup from the installation disc 1 and run the 'startup disk.app' from 'Utilities' and set it to start with the mac HD OS 10.4.7. This seems to fix it-I have done >15 repeated restarts with no more problems.....so far so good......:)
