Third Impact
Up until last night my macbook worked with my display, this morning it does not. The display is not broken, it displays my other devices. I am suspecting it is the cable, but unsure. Here are the things I tried:
  • PC reboot
  • plug in cable to both ports
  • tried a different mac
  • replugging cable to external display
and found
  • cable detected as 'USB-C Dongle' via System Report
  • display asks 'switch input?' when replugging cable
The cable is DP to USB-C, macbook on macOS 12.6.6

Can anyone be of help as to what 'USB-C Dongle' may imply about the cable? Thanks in advance

When the display asks if you want to switch input, answer yes.
sorry, that was just to indicate that the display detects the cable correctly. In my case, it doesn't matter which input the display is at, the mac goes into external display mode or whatever it can be called.

Perhaps my experience is totally unrelated to your issue but I have found that the cables with an "active" technology sometimes stop responding but when you unplug them and let them "rest" for a couple of weeks, they start working again as usual.
