MacBook Superdrive problems

Got my mb (see sig) about two and half weeks ago, and this weekend the superdrive futzed out. Would not read ANY media, not the stuff that it had wrote, nor even the disks that came with the machine.

So I did a bit of scouting around, before taking it in. And found this:

Does anybody else have this problem? I *think* its not the drive so much as something in the firmware, and hoping that they're not just going to replace the drive only to have it happen again.

I know its luck of the draw, but though the macbook is a better computer than my ibook in the form and speed factors, that ibook had hardly any problems. I've had kernal panics thrice on the mb -- not once on the ibook in the year I've had it, running the same programs and stuff.

Guess I'm learning the wisdom behind rev-a reticence.

I would go and get them to replace the drive, and if that's not the problem explain to them what you think it is, and have them do that. And also, just because one computer (MacBook) had a problem that the other computer (iBook) didn't have, doesn't make the faster one a bad computer. It just means it's a defect.

oh I absolutely LOVE the macbook. I'm just saying, the technology doesn't seem quite as honed as the ibook, which had a good five-six years of development behind it.

there are many ways in which the macbook is better, and, now using a 12" powerbook while the mb is in the shop, the 13" screen, the keyboard, the trackpad, and the build of the chassis are all much more to my liking.

Nothing is perfect. And one bad apple does not the grove bad make. Or something like that. Just, the superdrive problem seems to be more common that a 'glitch', from what I see on the internet.
