MacBook to get Merom at next update?

Just read this and it's an interesting prospect. I thought it'd be MBP first then MB at the second update but Reg think otherwise.

That would be simply amazing and would get me to buy my computer sooner than I thought. I'm waiting for a tibook in the mail, but who knows how long I'll use it after I see those brand spankin' new macbooks

With Apple using Intel it could mean quicker moves to newer chips as the competition will no doubt use the newest available - could be good for us! Also Merom gives better performance for less power and runs cooler should mean better battery life right?

I would think the MBP will recieve the memron ahead of the MB.

OR

If they get them at the same time i think the MB will get the 2Ghz Memrons and the MBP will get the 2.66Ghz and upwards. Wait a few weeks and see

I have been waiting for the memron based macbook to buy one. I am hoping that it will not only make it faster, but that it will take care of the whine and heat issues as well. Should that happen, I would buy one in a second!

It will not address the whine as that IS NOT an issue with the CPU. A 2Ghz Memron may run cooler than the current 2Ghz however though i wouldn't expect it to majorly significant

The Pro will get it first, or atleast the same time.. unless Apple is redoing the whole MacBook Pro and needs more time

But i'd think its unlikly Apple's "pro" line would be slower then the MacBook line

I disagree with your statement that it is not the CPU. My Latitude D620 makes the EXACT same whine while running on battery power and I have read reports about thinkpad T60s doing it as well. I think the whine comes from the Core Duo CPU while in power saving mode. I think if Intel corrected some issues with the Core 2 Duo we could see the end of the whine. Now the screen inverter whine.. that has nothing to do with the CPU.

ITS NOT THE CPU. There is no components in a CPU that are capable of producing an audible signal! The noise is the power circuit/management board around the CPU. I can tell you this for a fact....go and talk to an apple engineer if you don't want to take my word for it. Apple have already a KB article telling you to take your MB or MBP to an apple service centre if you have the whine.

What do you think they replace when you do? the system board. Becasue as i have told you that is what is causing the issue! Maybe the boards needed to be changed to accomadate the chips that wasn't seen at thier design stage and hence maybe it is the chip causing the circuits on the board to whine. But that is not coming from the chip nor is it a fault with the chip its a design fault of the system board.

This may be so but that still makes it an issue with the way the CPU and logicboard work with each other. Also, people who are getting their logicboards replaced STILL hear the whine but not as loud. Both the CPU and the components that control it are at fault with the Core Duo CPUs. With problems like this you CANNOT peg it to one compenent. Your logic regarding components on the logic board makes sense but it also makes sense that the CPU is also at blame for this problem as well. If it were not, replacement logic boards would completely eliminate the sound. I have called Applecare and they have even told me that it may not be possible to completely eliminate the sound until Intel advances its architecture within the Core Duo processor.

Edit - the more I think about eenu's point the more I agree. I hope Intel gets it together with their chipsets they put on the logic boards to make this sound go away!

I don't get any whine at all from my iMac. (945P chipset)

Still, Merom runs slightly hotter then Yonah (35w vs. 31w TDP) but it has better power management features via BIOS/EFI.

That is my concern as well. The 35w vs. 31w will require more power management by the CPU and since that is what causes the whine now, I worry it will only make it worse. Intel needs to get their CPUs and main logic chipsets to jive better with each other this time around.

This is what you originally said. And i think even Intel (if you could get them to admit) would tell you this is incorrect. There is no way a CPU can emit audible sound.

Yes the issue is the relationship between the board and the chip i never disputed that but i did dispute your original comments about the sound source

The more I think about your statement the more I agree. Intel really needs to focus on the chipset and how it relates to the CPU as that is the root of the problem. Good call and sorry for the unneeded disagreement haha
