Macbook to SDTV connection

I'm trying to connect my MacBook to a Sharp SDTV.

To do this I'm using this cable...

I connect R/G/B to Component.
System Preferences > Displays.
The TV is not detected.

I have the mini-DVI to DVI adapter. I use it to connect my laptop to an LCD monitor.


Please help. I'd like to resolve this once and for all.

You should be using DVI-I as it sends both the digital and analog video signals and component is an analog format.

DVI-D only sends digital.
 
I followed the guide spinnerlys mentioned.

Now I have the Mini-DVI to Video Adapter and A/V RCA Cable, as well as the necessary S-Video cable, which I picked up at Radio Shack.


What's happening now is I have a mirrored display on the TV but it's greyscale and all funky... the screen is displayed multiple times side-by-side. What could be causing this? I was really hoping this would do the trick. I've tried all the different resolutions.

Is the Mini-DVI to Video adapter an Apple one or an other different one? Only the Apple ones work on TVs. Have you tried not mirroring the display?
 
It's Apple. I'll have to try that.

edit: Tried NOT mirroring the displays. Didn't work. I bought this adapter on eBay. It looks identical to the Apple. Although unlikely, I suppose it could be a knockoff. Possibly it would work on a different TV, I don't know...
 
If it says "Designed by Apple" on the gray cable part of the adapter then is an Apple one. Else it isn't. If it isn't I'd suggest buying one direct from Apple. I got burnt by this as well.
 
On closer reading of the product description, I now see it says "Non-OEM" which I take to mean it was not manufactured by Apple... Tricky tricky.
