MacBooks got their refresh, how 'bout Imacs?? I'm just waiting to convert from the PC world, but have held out for an Imac update. I'm not so interested in a style change, as I like the current model, but would love to see updates to RAM, VRAM, HD without having to shell out extra to get it custom.

Of course, I've also waited for some other incentive to entice me...whether it be the "grad free iPod" promo with purchase, or an iLife update (which I'm guessing won't happen until Leopard).

Is it usual for Apple to do an update to one product (MacBook in this case) without shortly thereafter updating it's others (iMac and MBP)?? Tomorrow?? WWDC?? C'mon, now!

I'm in the exact same boat. I want to purchase my first iMac, but I am anxiously waiting the new release.

I hope it comes before WWDC.

Well they're hardly going to pull the store down again very soon and also, the front page has been updated too and AFAIK, that doesn't change too often, either.
The iMac could be a while off yet!

If you're waiting for a free ipod you will never get a mac. Just wait for the new revision. I'm guessing by end of June there will be one. I would just buy Leopard. It's only $129. That's not that bad.

Hmmm, why did i listen to the buyer's guide?

I started looking for a new PC in January, and then begin to experience the wonderful world of macs. i wanted an imac (20") with 256 vram, but the guide said updates soon. all i really want is an option to have a better graphics card. if i am going to drop $1500 on a computer, it better be able to at least play decent games.

i would have bought it back then if i knew i could 'replace' their current card with a better one, but alas. Seriously, these are the same cards the intel imacs were introduced with 16 months ago.

Would it really be that difficult to use a desktop cpu and graphics card in the imac? So make it 1/2" thicker. How do the 2.16 mobile C2D compare with the 2.4 desktop C2D as far as price and specs?

Well, just a rant from someone that wants to switch to a mac, but is waiting for a decent update to the imacs.

The front page changes all the time sometimes its cycling through a few products at the same time.

exactly how I feel!!! Don't even make it thicker, they got a G5 in there, a Conroe should be fine!! Desktop RAM too!

WHY are the iMacs using mobile components at allll!!!! :(

Not to mention that the 8-core BTO option on Mac Pros was launched on a wednesday.

I just don't see apple doing 2 releases back to back like that... Hope I'm wrong, for my friends sake, since he's going to be buying a 24" "in the next month or two"... but he's dead set against getting a newer model for some reason... I don't get it... (I think it has something to do with the fact they are on sale now, which may not be the case in 'a month or two')...

I'm also curious if Apple plans on updating their iMac series. Even though I will be buying one in November a black iMac would be awesome.;)

if they do make a new imac anytime soon, you think it will be the same price? i really dont want to get an imac late summer, just to have it for a month and the new one comes out. i can hold off if it comes out not too long from now

No iMacs today. I can't see that happening right after they release the MacBook.

I think all that's been going on has really impacted the next gen iMac and whether it will be an *update* or true revision remains to be seen. Here's my take on some of these things:

-Start with yesterday: update to the MacBook setting the stage for revision of the MacBook Pro at WWDC using LED screens and SR chips, maybe even some other goodies that will be important to higher end users. This provides the differential between the 2 product lines that Apple needs to keep the price points at different levels. A similar scenario may occur with the iMac between the 17-inch models and the 20 and 24-inch models which means we wait for SR chips and some other features (new graphics cards, LED screens not practical at this time for the iMac) - no revision, just an update at or after WWDC.

-Go back from there: the iPhone - new form factor and potentially the new "look" of Apple products to come. Black, aluminum, sleek, etc. Apple may want to roll out iMacs that have the same styling as the iPhone showing it as the perfect companion to the phone and even bolstering the iPhone as a "mini-iMac". This means a new iMac release (revision) near or after WWDC. The counter to that argument is that the MacBook is still white (& black); the new airport is still white; :apple: TV is aluminum - who knows?

-Even further back: Leopard - with the delay until this October, there may be some features in Leopard that may warrant hardware changes for *optimal* Leopard performance (i.e. more memory, different graphics, second HD for time machine - ????). Potential release of new iMacs at or near Leopard release.

I'm not an expert or an insider, just a guy who reads these websites and news articles on his lunchbreaks and at other times during the day - I have no proof of any of this, only speculative guessing on my part.

I personally think WWDC will see new MacBook Pros, Leopard, iPhone and the one more thing will be the new iMac. The iMac will be a new form factor (similar to iPhone) and both the iMac and MBP will have SR chips and new hardware / configurations that will take full advantage of Leopard (i.e. forward compatible). Later this summer and through fall we'll see mini updates, iPod revisions (maybe even widescreen iPod), Leopard release and another more dramatic update to the Mac Pro with better graphics.... This sets up the Holiday push to sell iPhones, iPods, :apple: TVs, and maybe even the odd computer or two....

keeping in mind that SJ stated Apple's goal is to replace all screens w/ LED by the end of 2008...a LOT of time between now and then...they may not be ready yet

Curious?

I'm a bit confused, whenever a new Apple computer or a significant upgrade comes out, I think all the "purists" call it 1st Gen or something and ALWAYS say it will be riddled with bugs, unrealiable and better wait till the next Gen!
But all I have been reading about is ..."can't wait any longer...."...LOL!
Seems if Apple makes a Black iMac everyone is going to storm the stores and buy them like they are the last of ALL Apples product's, I don't get it,
by the way I can't wait either...LOL!

Hardware "riddled with bugs"???? What??

macdon401 wrote above......."I'm a bit confused, whenever a new Apple computer or a significant upgrade comes out, I think all the "purists" call it 1st Gen or something and ALWAYS say it will be riddled with bugs, unrealiable and better wait till the next Gen!"

I'm still a PC user, I don't know Macs.........is this "riddled with bugs and unreliable" comment historically true of hardware realeased by Apple?? I've heard of small stuff on the software side, but hardware??? Apple experts, what's the word here??

I'd much rather go out and buy a current model, than have to wait for a new model to rid itself of bugs.

BTW, my target: 24" iMac, with 2GB RAM and 256 VRAM upgrades, and everything else at stock level.

If you don't want to risk bugs, don't buy Revision A. This is true across the industry, not merely at Apple.

Uncritical fan sites and computer company ad-supported magazines aren't your friend when it comes to wise buying decisions. You'll have to seek out unbiased sources of information, e.g.:

Considering playing games on any mac a bonus, not a birthright.
Otherwise you are in for a disappointment.

2 computers?

"Considering playing games on any mac a bonus, not a birthright.

i have been waiting for an updated graphics card in the imacs. i hoped for to get the 20" (with a 512 mb vram update) to dual use as 1) a great home computer for my wife and 2 kids, videos of the family, parental controls, and just plain ease of use and 2) a decent, not top of the line, gaming computer via bootcamp.

maybe i should get the lower end 17" imac for the family and use the money i save to build a separate pc for games? i would much rather have just the one computer, but...

would i be better off with a 2 computer setup? (cost, trouble, performance?)

what is the chance that there will actually be a decent graphics card update or bto option? or will it still be geared toward "average consumers"?

Please let me know, thanks.
