the weirdest thing happened not too long ago. i woke up and got ready to boot up my macbook, which rested on my table with its lid closed. magsafe wasn't in, so i plugged it in and suddenly, the apple logo lit up and there was the startup chime (remember, the lid is closed - no external display connection) and it booted right up to the point of entering password before i opened the lid. most odd i tell you.

had it gone to sleep due to a low battery, prior to plugging it in, or had it been shutdown?

It was a regular shutdown - the night before. At that time the system was regular and battery was fine. I guess it was just overexcited and, ahm..turned on prematurely.:p :D
