Hey everyone, my first post on this forum! I've been reading with interest about the macbook/macbook pro updates.

I got into UBC Medical School and I've started first year medicine. All good doctors should have an Apple notebook with them!

I'm interested in the MacBook Pro but according to many rumours (Canadian spelling) there will be a new macbook presented at MacWorld in January? I sure hope so!

After learning that the macbooks have only had minor updates I'm going to go out on a limb and predict that...

1) A total macbook pro revision will occur by late January and will include many novel features ie. Penryn and "interesting touchpad" and will have a totally redesigned case.

2) the macbook will also receive a new case and new features found in the macbook pro but they will not be released until June this is because
A) Apple recently updated the macbook
B) Apple doesn't want to hurt it's MBP sales in January
C) Almost all new features appear in pro models first
D) Grads and tax refunds are in May/June so they can target students and mainstream consumers

Apple has some awesome stuff coming down the pipe next year and I can't wait. I'm going to buy the new Macbook Pro. It's time to practice in style.

Let me know what you guys think

I pretty much guarantee that unless there is some multi-touch tech in there, the Macbook will not be announced months before release :)

I don't know about you guys but...
this wasn't an update to the MB at all.
Hey, not even Apple's front page has reflected the change, as most updates to their products did in the past. Another product that updates didn't cause much buzz was the mini... but hey, we all know the mini is dead, RIP...
So I do think new things might come in January. (too early for another update? remember last iMac G5 going Intel? How longe was that time frame?)
If not MB, the MBP for sure.
I agree with 9to5mac
We still have arena for price drops and a few add ons.
Bring on the new MBPs...

Not an update? What the hell were you expecting? Just because people started rumors doesn't mean that Apple has to fulfill them. This is exactly what I was expecting and I think that another update is another six months in the future.

8GB possible RAM, higher FSB, slightly higher clock speed on higher model, X3100... that's a pretty good update.

That's just an opinion though
Any of us might be wrong.
Apple is unpredictable sometimes...

thanks for the opinions!

Another thing the new macbooks must have are backlit keyboards and LED displays.

I am very disappointed that they did not do more substantial upgrades to the macbook. In fact, i was hoping that they would give the macbook new aluminum cases and LED displays.

Apple will have huge sales this xmas but I has hoping they would do more than just limp in and expect us all to open our wallets.

If it wasn't for the unusually quiet nature of this update (no notice anywhere on the web site except for the specs), I'd say there would be no chance of a January announcement, but now who knows?

But I doubt it would be 5-6 months in advance of shipping.

??????

So does anyone foresee an update for the MBP 17"?? i know everyones hoping for the addition of a 12/13" or whatever. But would that really be the only update/upgrade?

i guess im asking, im ready to buy the MBP 17" today, but i can wait, i dont want to but i will if something worthwile comes up. if all thats gonna happen is a smaller version, then id rather purchase now.

im primarily concerned with updates either specifically with the MBP 17 or MBPs across the board.

can anyone provide insights? suggestions??

yes there will be a penryn update to the Macbook Pro line in January. maybe even a new design for them too (I am hoping for black version too)

Umm what speed will it be bumped up to for penryn? 2.8ghz?

2.8 ghz sounds reasonable and a black anodized aluminum macbook pro would really go nice with my white labcoat :D

In all seriousness though, the black macbook pro should not be shiny either! It's got to be a gunmetal black not those cheap easy to scratch piano black finishes.

I'm also really hoping for the fluorescing touchpads which allow us to cut, copy, paste, zoom in etc.. with 2 fingers.

Fingers crossed!

This is the intel road map as it stands now (intel courtesy slide). How apple will implement this I don't know but I sure hope we get Penryn's in January!

Santa Rosa can address 8GB of RAM. There are no 4GB ram sticks yet, but there will most likely be some in the near future

You assume too much.

And Intel's datasheet for the chipset says 4GiB max.

I wouldn't say the macbook pro was updated on the 1st of nov, to it was more like a price increase, its the first time i have seen an so called upgrade or speed bump causing a price increase.

The iphone , ipods, imacs, and even the macbooks all were made cheaper or stayed the same price after ugrades or speed bumbs , yet the macbook pro if you want top of range model now costs 350 quid extra if you go for 17" hi rez screen 2.6ghz 200g hard drive , i new apple charge a premium for their name but i never knew it was this dear

I hope in january we will see the real upgrade to the macbook pro and a price decrease if it doesnt have a blu ray drive

I do think that january is really going to be Macpro new design and new penryn upgrade as its not been upgraded for a good while and a 40% chance of a new macbook pro design with penryn

It sure is damn hard not to get the macbook pro just now i keep going to apple store and making out the cost and then i just need to click confirm order but something is telling me to wait , wait but it sure is difficult

I do a lot of video editing so i need top of range macbook pro as i am sure macbook really wont do video editing as well.

I will ponder on with my dell inspiron 9200 17" 1.7ghz 80g ati 128mb 9700, which incidently i wanted to ask how much slower is this machine now compared to todays macbooks, video editing on this is now slow and a new dell 1730 was on order till i saw the apple leopard tour guide.

its funny apples biggest sales have came about cause of a windows own goal with the operating system vista , and apples bootcamp which lets you run either operating systems and parallels or vm fusion lets you do both at the same time ,

Windows better wake up soon or more and more are going to do what i am going to do and that is switch to apple when the time is right and i hope its january, might be even sooner if i dont stay away from the apple online store :)

I feel your pain. I myself am waiting for a 17in Macbook Pro for video editing. But something is also telling me to wait! Wait! It will be a worthwhile update! They need to have 512MB of video ram!

I think i'll start a support group for Macbook Pro waiters.

if they have 512MB of video ram along with 2.8 penryn.i'm so in:)...

Consider the 2.6 Ghz candy, its just there to satisfy us til the january update to penryn.

Both the MB and MBP are now on SR, it is my conclusion that Jobs gave the major update now, and when MBP comes out in January that he will do a minor speed increase to the MB. when the MBP go Penryn 2.6 and 2.8 the MB will go 2.2. and 2.4 or similar on the SR platform, that way the MB doesn't step on the MBP sales by having the same Ghz.

Tell me what you guys think.
