Macbook VGA output question

I know I can get an adapter for VGA out for an external monitor, I currently have a 15" dell lcd. I was reading where people say if you keep the lid open you get 2 screens and if close it's just the one on your external monitor. Can someone explain this better, do you get double the work room if you keep the lid open? From screenshots it looks like it puts the background on the external screen but that's all I could see. I couldn't find a specific answer by searching, anyone know? Thanks!

Yes, if you keep the lid open, you get more room to work on. You can simply drag a window from your MacBook's screen to the right or left (depending on configuration) and it will appear on the other screen.

You can also set your monitors to show the same (useful sometimes if you attach a projector/beamer). They call it synchronization.

I have my MacBook Pro and 22" LCD set in dual screen mode, it'll work the same for your MacBook and 15" LCD. First is the MacBook Pro screen, second is the 22" LCD screen.

Thank you guys, and thanks for the youtube link Arne. I thought this was too good to be true! I'm honestly in a little bit of shock, this solves my debate on caring if the mb screen is too small since most of the time it will be in one spot. Thanks!
