I have a 2.0 GHZ MacBook Pro with 2Gb of memory and 100gb 5400 hard drive. I also have a MacBook 2.0, with 1 GB of memory and 7200, 100GB Hitachi Hard Drive. I have been trying to decide on which one of these to keep or maybe keep both. It has been stated here many times the obvious differences between the two like graphics cards and lighted keyboards and such. I decided to run an unscientific comparison of my own.. I encoded video on both computers. I then burned the video on each of the computers. Here are some of the unscientific results.
1. The temperature of the MacBook was 10 degrees higher on average during the encoding process than the Pro was. The Pro ran 56-57 degrees C, and the MacBook 66-67 degrees C.
2. The time for encoding on both was within 12 seconds of one another.
3. Both processors ran at about 45-55% during compression and at temperatures of about 72-77 degrees C. The MacBook was actually degree or two cooler on average.
So, in conclusion I would say that the two were almost identical in the process except that the Pro has 2gb of memory and a 5400 drive while the MacBook has 1GB of memory and a 7200 drive. I'm not sure this will help anyone make an informed decision but decided to share it anyways.
