macbook was stolen. can i upgrade my iphone?

My macbook was recently stolen. Is it possible to upgrade my iphone to 2.1 and not lose everything on my iphone? I still don't have a replacement, but could use another mac to do the upgrade.

Will I lose everything on the iphone? Is there any way to save the music and data?

I haven't been able to find anything on the apple website in regards to this. Any insight would be appreciated.

My first move would be to copy your music back onto the new computer. Use "senuti" if you have a mac or some other ipod-computer transfer program for PC. As far as all of the data, when you go to do your software update it will backup all of your information and then restore it as the update finalizes. Haven't experienced this exact situation, but i once upgraded my 1st gen iPhone from 8gb to a 16gb. I used someone else's computer (kim i had no music on my old phone) and it kept all my contacts, ringtones, bookmarks ect. in the same order.

i am pretty sure you can still update without losing all your data. Just make sure your phone doesnt sync with the computer. Have auto sync off and click update.

Geoff's advice is definitely the best -- back up first, just in case. But after that, you shouldn't have any problems with 2.1.

Yes, is this new? I was somewhat surprised by this. I backed up too (always excellent advice to sync your iPhone before updating ... you really must), but I was quite surprised that I was not even asked about restoring from backup and did not have to re-sync after the update. Is that a change from the way these updates worked before, or is it a difference between letting iTunes automatically update you and having it download a full firmware file or something?

I also just confirmed that everything was backed up and not lost with the update. I'm glad I got a backup of a lot my music anyway so i can transfer it to my new laptop once purchased.

Must be because the only other time I've updated my iPhone was from 1.1.4 to 2.0.1, requiring the restore and re-sync.
