macbook whine (high pitched noise) only when 2GB RAM?

Hi,

I have also detected the whine (high pitched noise) on my new macbook. It is more noticable when conected to the mains and it gets unnoticable when running photo booth , QuietMBP, etc.

The thing is that after reading some thread forums it seems that this is only happening to those people with 2GB RAM. Can anyone confirm this?

On a side note, do you have a macbook or a MBP? Because I want to download QuietMBP but it's not available in macbook form.

What do you mean? It's not like QuietMBP checks what hardware you have, it just uses some CPU power so that your computer will stop whining.

I have a noise that comes from my Macbook CD 1GB 1.83Ghz, from the adapter port. Its like you can hear the power being used. It happends when its plugged in or not.

I also have a slight buzz (very high pitched) when the screen brightness is decreased below 100% it gets louder as you get lower, ad stops when its 0 or 100.

I tried QuietMBP and it rid me of the Magsafe noise, but not the screen dimming on. HOWEVER, it made my macbook heat up to like 75degrees C and the fans went on, and were louder then the noise it was preventing. That occured even at the lowest setting.

Sooo does anyone KNOW whats causing these two noises? and has anything be released to combat them?

Take it to an Apple Store, they should fix the whine problem. As for the screen one, that's a different problem, but also, take to an Apple Store.

I have Quiet MBP (which you can actually use in a MB without problem) and my temp. hasn't changed. Do you have the FanControl or those things to manage the fans installed?

EDIT: I don't know the exact cause, but the whine happens when the processor is nor being used or has very little activity. If you start processor intensive apps the whine disappears. I don't know why in Windows (bootcamp) it does not happens...one more to the list of things I like about Windows.

Whine from the fans or from the SD? Mine whines but that's cause I change the fan speed to keep it cool.

As far as I know, Apple doesn't have a fix for the CPU whine (what you're calling "the magsafe noise"). That is, they don't have a fix for the MacBook. That's quite baffling, considering they have a fix for the MacBook Pro.

They exchanged my logic board, and it didn't make a difference. I'm thinking they haven't developed new logic boards to fix the issue, at least not yet. I'm getting a new computer though, and if that doesn't whine I'll be incredibly happy (unless it suffers from other errors, of course). If it does whine, I don't know what to do.

However, I believe they could fix your screen whine. That issue doesn't seem to be as common, so I'm guessing that's actually fixable.

I have a White 2.0 GHz Core Duo MacBook with 512 MB RAM and it exhibits the exact whine you described.

Well when i downloaded QuietMBP it allowed me to adjust the amount of rest between cycles in the CPU it used, It was basically all the program allowed me to do.

And i have done some reading and the screen dimming issue seems common for MBPs and claims to be a bad inverter. But in my situation being in canada without any apple stores i cant just take mine in and have them look at it. I have to call and then find a repair place (theres only 1 however, and they kinda scare me) i cant just mail it back to apple either, thats only in USA. So i dont know if its worth the hassle, these buzzes and hisses, and things i CAN live with, i mean have you ever sat next to someone with an Acer? it sounds like someone left a blowdryer on...

My macbook will be okay with those things for a bit i think.... I will see how everything goes.

But are these common? or will i have to argue with the employees about their severity and prove it annoys the heck out of me, (besides in a busy computer shop no one will hear my little screen whine anyway right? i can only hear it when i work late in the library, or in bed.)
