Ok, so I have a new MacBook its only about 3 weeks old and I LOVE it!! Now with that said I am a little illiterate concerning cyberspace!! I moved to a new home and was able to connect to the net via "linksys"? Is this safe? I am having cable installed tomorrow with internet. But, do I really need internet? I seem to be able to connect just fine without my own personal service through Linksys. What should I do?

Be careful. You are using a neighbor's internet who has set up an unsecured wireless network. He may not mind, but if he finds out and does mind, you could be in big trouble. In certain places using a wireless connection without the owners' permission is considered theft and a crime.

Not a lecture, but do the right thing. Get your own service or work out something with the neighbor.

In short, you really should get your own internet service. You might really score some brownie points with your neighbor if you tell him/her that their wireless network isn't secure too. :)

I wouldn't worry about the wireless networks being confused. It's kind of like how you can have a family that has multiple cell phones. Each person has their own unique number and signal. Wireless internet networks are similar. Each network has it's own unique identification (network address). Likewise, each network can have it's own secure password that prevents unwelcome visitors from using the network.

go for comcast cable modem, DSL is SLOW!!!!

Sounds like you may need help setting up your wireless network. If you have a friend that knows something about setting one up have them help you, or you can ask on here, I am sure someone will help you through it.

good luck :)

there is someone in my neighborhood with a network called 'stopstealinmynetbitc***' or something along those lines ;)

Thanks for all the advice! I will have comcast cable internet set up today. I really want to be wireless and they said I would have to buy a box from Best Buy or somewhere to make that happen. So I may be back later to ask what you would buy! But thanks again and I will find out who's internet I have been using to let them know it is not secure!! I'm really glad I found this forum! :)
