Hi all, I’m thinking about getting a macbook then purchasing a dual layer drive and replacing the factory drive. Does anyone know of a drive that works? Notably the 17" MBP drive? Thanks

You can not physically fit any dual layer drives currently on the market in the MacBook. End of discussion.

A linkety for something that doesn't exist? :)

The only way the 17" has a dual layer drive is because the case is wider, so the trackpad doesn't partially sit on top of the drive (like it does on the 15" and MBs), which means that they can use a taller drive. The drive from the 17" won't fit in the 15".

Why don't you just buy a fast, inexpensive external dual layer drive? Are you doing to be burning dual layers while you're "out"?

MacService appears to be claiming that they'll install one for you. I can't find any specific details about it burning DL discs, but the intro text suggests that it will.

What is that based on? Linkety please...

I am going to say it's based off of the fact that if they couldn't fit a DL drive in the 15" MBP, how could they fit one in the MacBook. Of course, I could always be wrong, and in the future, you probably could. But to my common sense, if they couldn't fit one in the 15" MBP, why do you think they could fit it in the 13" MB, which has very similar dimensions (most notably thickness and the biggest problem: width).

Now, I'm confused…

The MacBook is slightly thicker than the 15" MBP (about 1.5 mm)...might be enough space to squeeze it in.

Again, I could be wrong (I'm adding this to every post now), but I believe the extra thickness is primarily in the screen. If you look at the gallery on Apple.com, you can see that, and me just comparing my black MB to my PB the screen is thicker on the MB. Also, you must factor in that on the MB, the optical drive is on the side, not in the front, where the trackpad is over it. For the MB, the keyboard is on top of it.
