I currently have a midrange SR Macbook (2.2ghz, 1GB, 120GB, X3100), and I was wondering if it was worth investing for a mini-DVI connector to power my 1920x1200 LCD that's currently hooked up to my desktop. For those who know, how well do the current generation of Macbooks hold up at resolutions like this? I would imagine Leopard effects would be pretty sluggish with poorly optimized X3100 drivers, but should I go for it? Has anyone else tried powering an HD external display through the mini-DVI port? What are your impressions? Thanks =]

Consider bringing your Macbook to your nearest computer outlet and try yourself. But who knows, maybe someone has personal experience.

Not precisely what you're looking for, but...

My G4 1.42 Mac Mini with the OLD 32 MB video chip runs my 1920x1200 24" LCD wonderfully.

I'm guessing your system will love it.

The video chip can handle it just fine. Of course, you can't play games very well on that chip even on the internal screen's 1280x800, so don't expect to play them on the external at higher resolution; but anything that works on the internal will work at 1920x1200 just fine.

(In fact, you can even run both at the same time.)

I agree with Ehurtley regarding the games. My older macbook 2.0gz works fine on a 1600x1200 display (its a formac 4:3)

I've a MacBook of the frist generation and it works with a 23" Cinema Display. You can play games with a lower resolution. Not all new effects in Core Animation work without "hanging". That's a little bit disappointing - but basically it you can use a screen with a 1200x1920 resolution.
