Hey everyone,

I'm finally caving in and going to sell my 2007 iMac in favor of either a 2.66 Quad or 8-core 2.8 model (some stores still have stock for $2,300).

Anyhow, I also need a laptop to go along with it and to keep costs down I thought about the white macbook with an OWC 7200 320GB HD and the 6GB kit. Anyone else use just a macbook as there 'on the go' system rather than a full blown MBP? I'd get an alum macbook but unfortunately I have a few fireiwire devices (on the way canon HV30, external drives) so it ruled that out.

Mostly the portable is just for tethering during photo shoots and light on the road design, the MP will be doing the heavy lifting.

Any thoughts?

I use a 2.4Ghz Uni-MB for portable use and have found it to be the perfect size. While my aging MBP has it's days numbered. I would highly recommend the MB if your looking for portability more.

Good to hear! I would like the newer MB but again no firewire right now means a no go, but the older white models only seem to have a 7% decrease so that isn't a huge deal to me.

Now If I can just decide on the 2x 2.8/8800 GT/500GB for $2,599 I found or go with the new 2.66 Quad...

If you have a Mac Pro workhorse at home you aren't going to need a workhorse on the road. Opt for more in the Mac Pro, and get an older macbook, or even a netbook such as the MSI Wind for the road. You'll probably do less editing on it than you think.

Update! Need to make choice asap =)

Well I found a buyer for my 2007 IMac for $700 (lower end 20in) so I'm basicially ready to make an enormous purchase. (even despite my grumbling in these forums) because I work with Macs, my colleagues work with macs and saving money to give that up isn't worth it in the long run.

That said it seems my macbook would just be my on the go machine and not for serious editing etc so the extra expense of a macbook PRO and a Mac Pro is beyond my price range.

So here are my Choices:

1. 2009 Quad w 4870 bto / OWC 8GB / extra 1TB WD Black
with Macbook / OWC 4GB / WD 250GB 7200RPM
Total - iMac sale = $3,575.93

2. 2008 Quad / OWC 16GB / 1TB WD Black / 3870 512MB
with Macbook / OWC 4GB / WD 250GB 7200RPM
Total - iMac sale = $3,253.93

My opinion would be go for the 1st option. I'm actually considering a 2009 Mac Pro this summer to replace my mbp. the 09 model will probably last longer and the upgrades in the future will be easier for it. Like the video cards Apple sells for "last gen" mac pros. you could be one step ahead with the 09 model.

True, I can save money and buy from Amazon etc then get a 3870 for about $200, I haven't read a difinite answer to 'is the 4870 worth it' over the 8800 or 3870 since Barefeats had mixed results.
