Can you get a matte finish screen on a MacBook? I'm looking at the possibility of replacing my Powerbook G4 with a MacBook (I don't need a MacBook Pro), but I really didn't like the glossy screen when I looked at them in the Apple store.

Bummer.. I'll stick with the Powerbook then. I don't have problems reading text on matte screens. Less distractions from glare and shadows and stuff.
You could always buy an external screen w/ matte display.. in the processes defeating the purpose but still..
if you like the size of the MB you could consider a 12" Powerbook G4, but if you already have a G4 powerbook its only a lateral step as opposed to one forward.

Well I have a 1.67GHz Powerbook, which is great. The only reason I want a MacBook is it's faster, can run windows if needs be. I don't really need the grunt of a MacBook Pro, so I can't justify it.
I think some on here have pulled apart their MacBooks and installed different matte panels.
This is major surgery and voids your warranty but I'm pretty sure there are people on here who were crazy - and talented - enough to do it. If I tried I would probably wind up with two broken LCD panels (old and new), a disassembled MacBook that wouldn't go back together again (if I could even disassemble it, which is questionable), etc. I can use computers but fixing them, that's someone else's job ...
I do not like the glossy screen but ultimately it is not enough to make me jump to the bigger, heavier, less durable and more expensive MacBook Pro, which is why I am about to buy a white MacBook.

I'm reasonably adept at computer repair. I've installed new RAM and HD in my mac mini, but that's something I wouldn't do. I don't like the thought of kissing my warranty goodbye!

The gloss screen really is not an issue as the screen is so even and bright that you can adjust any glare out.
You do get reflections, but it is only a matter of adjusting your viewing angle slightly.
I bet that the next revision will have LED backlighting and also an option for Matt (if they have listened).
