MacBook woes

my 1.83 ghz macbook is acting quite strange. When i turn it on it makes the optical drove noise but then the sleep light flashes and the screen stays black. No gray screen, no chime, nothing. Just the flashing sleep light.

Any ideas as to what is going on?
