Macbook won't open disk utility!

PLEASE HELP!

Ok got a few errors so i tried to reinstall OS 10.4 on my macbook. But now when i get into the installer it doesen't show the disc to install onto. So i go to the utilities menu and click on Disk Utility. The Window sits there saying Gathering disc information. It goes no further. After a while of waiting the disc stops spinning. I have yet to get into disk utility properly. Help!

Ok well i got disk utlility open finnally but now i've re partitioned when i try to reinstall the installer stops @ 0% Installing Essentials Time Remaining About 3 hours and 2 minutes.
You were right...Dead Hard drive
