Hi,

I have MBP 16" Intel with 64 GB, AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 8 GB, Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB. I currently run macOs Ventura Version 13.6.1 (22G313).

I originally bought this laptop for software development. I also run a Desktop Parallels Windows 10 VM.

Lately, in the context where I leave a lot of software running, the machine starts to not respond to keys and mouse movement for short periods of time. Even when I wrote the previous phrase, the keys stopped a few times.

Now, I've been reading that these laptops get very hot, so I bought a cooling pad a while ago which I have currently turned on.

From what I read - and please correct me if my understanding is incorrect- the laptop gets hot and the kernel_task kicks in and it basically stops programs from running. The windowServer process is at the top. I use an old Thunderbolt Display monitor from 2011. Could this cause the laptop to get so hot? I was thinking of buying another monitor - I had my eyes set on a 4k Dell monitor - Dell UltraSharp 32 4K USB-C Hub Monitor - U3223QE, but I wonder if I'll have the same issue.

As far as the CPU goes, the computer is currently idling roughly at 90%.

Any thoughts, recommendations? Maybe I should unplug the monitor and see if I still have this issue with just the laptop...

Edit: I found this video:
it seems that not all the monitors have this issue...

Edit2: I disconnected my laptop from the monitor and I rebooted it. No problem now.

I use an old Thunderbolt Display monitor from 2011.
Which TB ports are you using for power and display? I have a similar setup w/ power into the back left TB port and TBD using TB3>TB2 adapter into the back right TB port. No issues whatsoever. Smooth as butter. Do you have any ports on the TBD in use? I’m only using Ethernet.

Hi,

Until yesterday I had (as I face the laptop):
  • on the right side (my right):
    • the apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 adapter that connects the laptop to TB Display (I plug the TBD cable)
    • an USB-C to USB adapter that I connect from time to time to load different devices
  • on the left size I have:
    • the power cable
    • a cable for the air pods box
After I watched the video yesterday, I reversed the USB-C to TB and the power cables, so now the power cable is on the right side of the laptop and the interface with the TBD on the left side. It seems to make a difference. For how long, I don't know. Your position is the same as my old one.

As far as TBD ports in use, yes, I use: an USB for the mouse, an USB for the keyboard, a TB port for an external drive, and another USB port to feed the cooling pad (which is not always on).

I will keep an eye on it.

I am thinking of replacing the TBD with a newer monitor but I wonder if I would have the same issue with the new monitor. The video recommended the USB-C to display port adapter (as opposed to the hdmi adapter) and also a refresh rate of at least 60hz.

You are monitoring CPU but are monitoring temperature sensors as well? Install software to monitor sensors and review the temps while this behavior is happening.

Just coming back to the thread - it is working fine now. Again, replacing the cables, left the cable for TBD, right the cable for power, made the difference.
