I've burned 2 cds so far and both turned out as coasters, at the max speed of 24x on my macbook pro. I called apple and they told me that this is normal and that I should simply burn slower, but I don't see how this makes any sense as I used to burn at 40x on my old pc.

Do any of you guys have problems burning at 24x? Also, my CD-Rs are by Sony so I'd figure they'd be good quality. Please help!!

I have no problems, and Sony sucks. Sony is evil. Sony would rape you if they could. Don't use/buy Sony.

Get some Memorex or something, they generally have good discs. 24x is no problem, I burned at that speed all the time with an old powerbook 12" g4.

Sounds like you're doing something else wrong, or your Sony media just plain sucks.

I always use Roxio's Toaster. I found Apple burning utility to suck.
I always buy DVD's and Cd's from SONY and they always work well. The only fault I've ever had was with one that didn't have a printed label...

The worst discs in my opinion are from Imation those really suck.

Verbatim makes great discs as well.

Actually, it's the craptacular Matshita UJ-857 drive that comes stock in the MBPs that's the issue. It's a piece of... well... crap.

Matshita UJ-857 units flawed. zebra silenced by Apple.

That's just one resource about the issues with it, there are links on that page to the Apple Discussion forums which, in the Optical drive section for the MBP, are practically full of nothing but complaints about how... well... craptacular this drive is.

I went out and bought a Plextor 18x external drive and put it in a Firewire/USB enclosure for home use. On the go if I absolutely must use a CD/DVD, then I'll use the internal drive, but that's the only time.

It's a pretty bad piece of hardware and Apple is just ignoring the complaints about it so far. Not good, not good at all.

ps
Most Sony DVD media these days is made from Taiyo Uden blanks - some of the very best DVD media made. Head over to http://www.cdfreaks.com and read the forums - you'll see TY discs are highly favored by people serious about burn quality. Sony just rebrands them with the Sony name, but they're damned fine media and the only ones I've ever used for DVD burning.

I've been using apples own built in burning software, I figured people love macs because everything is integrated so I try using just mac stuff :p well at least it works at slow speeds I guess

I'll try during the next couple days to burn using Toast, if there is still a problem I'm going to TRY and make a complaint, athough not sure if they'll believe me
