MacBookPro shutting itself down

I'm gonna type this very fast, dunno how long I have before this MBP decides to shutdown again.

Apparently I am one of many users who are experiencing random shutdowns on their portables. Mine is like 8 months old (first revision MBP) and until today, after I did an "Archive and Install" operation it starting shutting itself down (3 times in less than an hour).

My questions are:

1. Is there anything that can be done to fix/delay the shutdowns?
2. Has anyone sent his/hers to Apple and had the problem fixed?

I am in Costa Rica and luckily I am going to Washington this coming week. I really cannot have this happening every now and then...dunno if they will fix it good or should I demand a new machine. Thanks!

8 months = warranty

Please do everyone a favor and report this issue to Apple, and take it in to be looked at!

These issues will never get resolved if people attempt to fix them, by themselves, without Apple having to "deal" with the problem at all.

Don't let your warranty expire, have them look at it!

backing it up is good. My roommate returned his C2D MBP (Kernal Panics) and they gave him a new one, AND the new one that he got had all of his same settings from his previous machine. (Same everything) Hope that helps. Bottom line is to take it in. We'll talk you through your struggle though.

Dude, just do the firmware update for the SMC 1.1

You have to do it really fast, but after that, it should be ok.

Follow the instructions (Read them) and the issue will be gone.

do you have another mac you can transfer files over using Target Disk mode? Otherwise booting into Target Disk should be mountable by any computer that has 1394, or Firewire support.

I had to do this with one of my iBook G3's when the logic board died !

If you don't have the firmware update, try it and see if that helps. My Macbook Pro C2D had random shutdowns (not quite as often as you) so it wasn't firmware based. Macbook Pros have random, non-heat related shutdowns, it's pretty rare but some do (both CD and C2D): http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=3583277#3583277

I sent mine in and Apple decided to send me a new one. If the genius says "Macbook Pros don't have random shutdowns, only Macbooks did." Insist that this isn't the case.

Funny how some Geniuses will say that it doesn't randomly shutdown to a customer who is reporting random shutdowns. Would I willingly part with my Macbook Pro if it WASN'T randomly shutting down? Jeez.

I have lots of external HDs, so the creating a backup was rather simple

It sucks to be working like this, you never know when your computer will quit on you without any type of warning
