This is my first post. I have been a Windows user for years but I am thinking of giving Mac a go. I have my mind set on a 2.4 C2D 17' MBP with hi res glossy display and 7200 rpm HDD. Primarily I use my computer for watching large HD files be it 720p,1080i,1080p in mkv format. Also i use newsleecher a LOT. The reason i want to switch to Mac is their superior operating system and build quality. Is switching to Mac a good move as far as the tasks i want to use it the most are concerned? Thanks in advance. I hope this is the right forum for this kind of topic

I think it will be fine for that though I don't use mine for that. Right now I'm doing a ton of streaming video to my TV as I just bought an Apple TV and it totally kick ass.
Don't worry about leaving Windows. With these new intel macs, Windows is there if you want/need it via Bootcamp or Parallels. So whatever you were doing on your old windows computer can be done exactly the same on your new mac.
So I say go for it. With a new macbook pro, you will have it all - Mac OS X, Windows and even Linux if you want it via Parallels.

I am not quite sure about that. I have a matte screen now for my PC and when i watched the same video file on a glossy laptop i was surprised by how much better it looked.
I went with matte for mine as I cannot abide glare. It drives me crazy! Your mileage may vary but I will never use a glossy screen. I just can't stand the reflections.
It's all a matter of preference. I was using a Matte screen for a year and thoroughly enjoyed an upgrade to the glossy screen.
I like the glossy better, but right now I'm stuck with the Matte :/
Ah well.
But yeah, you'll enjoy the Mac for what you're doing.
I had a glossy and a matte MBP playing some Disney clip right next to each other in the Apple store yesterday. Glossy looked so much better to me, more vibrant and it made the matte just look dull next to it.

If you're going to watch lots of movies/videos, definitely go for the glossy display. I personally don't think that the reflection on the glossy displays would be that bad..
Glad that the mkvs do work on a Mac just as good as Vista

I've been using my dad's MB for a while now and I will say that the glossy screen is great... when it is dark in the room around me.
The glossy screen reflects just about any and every source of light there is when you're not in a dark room.
So I'm very happy with my matte screen iMac for the time being.

I used to fall into the pro-matte camp. I owned or worked on most every variation of PowerBook...12/15/17-inch...TiBook, AlBook, whatever...
Then, I bought a MacBook with a glossy screen...I absolutely love it! Vivid colors and no problems with glare to speak of. And, I can use it comfortably even when stuck in sardine-class on an airliner.
I have heard all of the arguments against glossy, particularly for graphics designers. Well, I never trust the screen calibrations for color anyway (too easy for mistakes) so I prefer hard proofs as it is.
Soooo... I think for most people, glossy is fine...still a user preference so pick what you like. But I don't agree with the view that it is a mistake to go glossy (or matte, for that matter).

If you want to use your Mac to watch movies, buy a MacBook and a 23" or 30" display instead of 17" MacBook Pro. My two pence.
I say WAY COOL.
A bit expensive compare to your average Dell PC but the price is way worth it or even a bargain from what I seen in from the Apple Store.

From a glossy screen user that does video work, some in HD, the glossy is fine. Some people make a big deal of the glare but to me it is not bad. The Matte screen is so dim I just could not take it. Rich colors is what I wanted when looking at my video and the glossy gives me richer colors.
One thing you will love is the integration of all the software and when doing video that is important.
Look you will love your Mac, above the stuff you normally do you will find yourself interested in doing more because the OS and its bundled software makes doing more things so easy.
