macbooks and 3d modeling (rhino)

Hello all,


I was wondering if any new macbook owners had already installed bootcamp/xp/ rhino/maya already.

I have a friend who is tempted to buy one but he is worried about the integrated video on the motherboard. I know that maya is very labor intensive if you use many textures, and that rhino is much less so. My advice to him was that the difference between the macbook and his 3 year old dell ($3000 at the time) would be readily apparent. And that rhino would run fine, and maya would run fine also however a little bit slower then his desktop, a dual core g5.

anyone have direct experience or any advice on this?

As far as i know, Rhino is pretty heavily dependent on the graphics card. I have a Dell box with a Pentium 4 3.0 ghz, a 128MB ATI card, and 512MB RAM. When I have a model with a lot of polygons, Rhino chokes a bit. I was thinking of bumping the graphics to a NVidia card (they supposedly have better OpenGL support) with at least 256MB RAM. I have doubts that the integrated graphics can handle Rhino that well.

i was under the impression that rhino was relativly easy on the graphics card, but i guess the keyword there is RELATIVELY.

(if only i could spell...)


think it depends on relative performance with this guy.

Well, it's hard to say really, without really testing it out in person. The Core Duo 2.0 ghz will kick some major ass on any CPU-related tasks. So the CPU might compensate somewhat.
