Hey Guys,

Ok, I've mentioned this issue in another couple of threads, but I thought I would knock up a simulated JPG of what this chicken-wire effect looks like.

In case you are wondering, I got a 2.0Ghz MacBook C2D about 2 weeks ago and I've noticed the screen has this effect all over it. It's not grain. When you look at the screen up really close, it looks like there is a very fine diagonal cross-hatching (what i call chicken-wire) effect. It's not visible all the time. It only seems to become annoying when viewing whites and if my eyes are a certain distance from the screen.

I'm not very keen on returning it, cos it's basically perfect in every other aspect (no dead/stuck pixels and even backlighting). However, I was wondering if any of you guys out there can have a look at your MacBook screens and see if you have the same effect.

The image below is my 'attempt' to re-create the issue. I basically took a screen capture, then added a rectangle with cross hatching over the top and set the opacity to 10% in Adobe Photoshop. I didn't cover the whole image with the chicken-wire, so that you would see the difference.

Please let me know if anyone has this too. If you use the Zoom trick to zoom in on this image, you will see the chicken-wire more clearly (That's hold Ctrl and then scroll UP with the mouse to zoom in).

Check to make sure your display is set to millions of colors (System Preferences -> Display -> Colors). Your chicken wire image sort of reminds me of the picture on my very first Mac that would only display 256 colors. Worth checking before you take your computer back.

I picked up a MacBook C2D a couple weeks ago and my display is very bright and clear. I'd take it to your local Apple store and ask them what they think of it.

Thanks Stampy. It's definitely set to Millions of Colours.
To be fair, the chicken-wire is not as pronounced as it is in my image. It was my best mock-up of it :)

I'm starting to think this is a duff display. It's a pity too, as it's perfect in all other ways.
The chicken-wire does annoy me though.

Ahhh.... My nearest Apple Store is about 500 miles away in London (I think). I don't know anyone else with a MacBook to compare. The only thing I can think of is to check out some MacBooks on display in the John Lewis Department Store in Glasgow.

Thanks for the suggestion anyway.

I had this on one of my countless macbooks - a criss-cross pattern. I took it in to the applestore and they replaced the display. all of them have it if you look from an extreme angle down on the display, but it shouldn't be visible from normal viewing angles.

Call me crazy...

But I'm looking at that picture on my MBP and it looks fine to me

:p

Honestly though, I just upgraded to a MBP from the MB, and my MB screen didn't look anything like that. I would suggest getting it swapped for a different one. The MB screen is quite nice and shouldnt look like that.
