As usual it's me against MDN. Their latest article:

"Tech writer says Apple’s ‘Get a Mac’ commericals don’t work
You've probably seen those commercials with the cool young guy standing next to the hopelessly nerdy old guy chatting about some way that Apple computers are just soooooo much better than PCs that run Windows," Tony Briggs writes for The Daytona Beach News-Journal.

One would think that Apple would learn this is not the best way to win over Windows users. That's pretty clear, since about 95 percent of the world still uses PCs running Windows and only 5 percent use Macs. But Apple thinks different, I guess," Briggs writes. "Here's a tip for Steve Jobs and company: Insulting the people you are trying to sell to probably isn't the best strategy."

However the best bit MDN's take:

"First of all, Apple Mac users are smarter than Windows users (See Those who surf the Web using a Mac tend to be better educated and make more money than their PC-using counterparts, according to a report from Nielsen/NetRatings.)"

I mean, brilliant. Why bother looking at how the report could be false: is it that most Mac Users spend more on their machines, have a higher disposable income and perhaps have attended (not excelled, attended) more schooling? Or is it because using a Mac boosts your brain power? Or is it because the report is bollocks. Who knows? MDN certainly don't care!

I personally don't like the ads at all, but Steve said at WWDC that Apple were thrilled with them, and the fact that they've made more indicates that they are working. I guess we'll find out on Wednesday.

I've not actually spoken to any of my mates that rate them. They just make you switch off!

Let it be a lesson to you, then, never to take MDN's opinions as holy gospel. They're Macintosh stalwarts who refuse to acknowledge anything negative against Apple. They're hold-overs from the Apple zealot years.

That said, the ads are nice and I don't know if they're winning users or not, but people take these ads way too seriously. They're not mocking the people use the computers, but the computers themselves. People seem to forget that, for the most part, the two people represent computers and not the given userbase.

I disagree, they represent the computers and the user base. That's all I have to say about that! :p

Well I disagree with YOU.
I have friends on PC's who find the ads amusing and don't take offense to them. It hasn't gotten any of them to switch, though -- but that's mainly due to cost/comfortability factors.

I agree people takes these ads WAY too seriously. I also know Mac people who hate them ONLY because they THINK that PC users will get offended. Huh?!? I'm a devoted Apple guy, but there's nothing more annoying than overly-sensitive Mac users....

I'm going to extend this: there's nothing more annoying that overly-sensitive people!
