I just saw an ad on Facebook that was very professionally done and looked very inviting for MacKeeper. It keeps your Mac running efficiently. I did not click on the download button because I thought I remember reading somewhere this was a terrible program and causes more harm than it does good. Does anyone know if that is true? Is there something I should do regularly to keep my Mac clean and running at peak peformance?

Don’t do it, don’t do it, don’t do it.

Run MWB for Mac: https://www.malwarebytes.com/mac-download/

Shut down your computer at least once a week, empty the Trash, and keep the OS up to date.

Beyond that, not really much more you need to do in terms of maintenance.
Agree, agree, agree!

Malwarebytes is excellent, used it on my old Win 7 computer and use it now on my Mac.

Really, really don't do it! It's malware plain and simple. Advertising, collecting personal data, ends up slowing your computer, creates further security holes...
