There have been a couple of discussions about third party retailer returns on bto iMacs and I was wanting to clear it up. I would like to get an i7 at macmall and use the $150 discount. I believe I still have to pay tax in il though. Anyways, if I get it and tere are a couple dead pixels next to each other in the center, I just have to send it into apple and have them repair it under the one year warranty right? The bad part about macmall is that I can't just exchange it out for a new one?

I am also planning on buying AppleCare at wherever is cheapest. That should get me in home service no matter where I bought it right? I live about 200 miles from an apple store and I'm assuming AppleCare still gets you in home service. I even had in home service when I lived in Valencia (20 miles north of LA). I'm sure there was an applestore somewhere near then.

I just want to make sure there aren't any crazy loopholes going through macmall. Mostly if I still get in home service, I'll be gravy.

I don't know about in home service, but you are correct that you can't return it to macmall no matter what's wrong with it. That's one way they stay so cheap.

if you want in home service get a dell, apple has never sent anyone out to fix any machine I had with them, regardless of age.

applecare = permission to take it to apple store for fix

I think I remember tht when I first bought my g5 iMac they told me that you got in home service if you lived far enough away. Otherwise I guess they could pay shipping both ways to have it fixed

That's not true, your Applecare includes On-Site service. I used to work doing these. I would get a dispatch and go to someones house and do a repair. It is determined by your location though. You can go here and check:

http://www.apple.com/support/products/premium/onsite.html

Your Applcare probably wont cover "a couple dead pixels" That's within spec.

If you bought from Apple directly you could return/replace the computer within the 14 days.

I have talked to a few CSR's from Macmall/Clubmac/MacConnection, (all the same company by the way) And was told that if I was to get a computer that had an issue out of the box, like a dead Drive, or a cracked screen, or it wont boot up, that they will take a return on the computer and offer a full refund. Even though there site says NO REFUNDS. Now I don't know if this was just a sales pitch to get me to buy or not. I have always ordered from Apple.

From Apple's Support FAQ regarding what is offered by Applecare:

"Apple may provide service through one or more of the following options: carry-in service (to Apple retail stores or Apple Authorized Service Providers), customer drop-off (to UPS stores in the U.S., for iPod and iPhone only), direct mail-in service, onsite service (for desktop computers), or Do-It-Yourself (DIY) parts (so you can service your own product)."

i purchased an i7 from them (hasn't arrived yet), and i called them twice, asking about their return policy. both times they said that if the machine was DOA, i could return it for a new one within 14 days. i told them that on their site it says no returns on apples. but they still insisted i could return the machine within the 14 day period. since i'm getting 160 dollars off, + no tax, + free printer and parralells, i figured id give it a try.

*crosses fingers* hoping there won't be any problems

ofc, i dunno what they consider "DOA"

I should have done this earlier but I thought the answer would be pretty cut and dry. I called apple and talked to the support rep from AppleCare. If you are within mileage of an authorized applerepair center, I am, they will fix your computer in house. This may also be because I'm so far away from an apple store. I'm not sure what the mileage is, but I'm just less than30 miles from one.

When I lived in Valencia, CA I had someone come to repair my computer. It was pretty nice. They came within a day.

She did tell me They won't do software related problems. You have to send it in to apple for that. But hard drive, ram, logic board..etc. Screen problems will probably have to be sent back to apple though.
