MacMall: Wait for new iMac in March

Here's the text of an email forwarded through our local MUG (Mac Users Group) in Tupelo MS. One of our members sent it to our moderator, and details a discussion he had when trying to order a G5 Intel iMac from MacMall.

I called Mac Mall and was ready to place my order for a Intel G5 iMac... the sales person who I deal with often asked me some general questions like they do when users call in requesting to order Mac computers. Well, I told him I wanted this basically for my video editing, photo editing etc... stuff like that... guess what he said... you don't want this machine! I said what? I'm dying to get this machine because that is what I want to do... he said that these machines are having a TON of problems running any Photoshop Adobe programs and also they will not run Final Cut Pro 5. He said they got word last Tuesday that Apple is releasing a new version of Intel iMac G5 at the beginning of March that will allow users who are wanting to use Final Cut Pro or adobe products to run on these new Intel core chips. As of right now I will not be able to use it on these machines and if I bought it today then there will not be any software updates or releases by Apple to fix this on the machine I would have bought today because it's a Intel Chip problem that they have resolved but can only fix by supplying a new line up to the family of Apple in March.

I'm no heavy duty computer user, but from all the discussions going on and the delay in shipping MacBook Pro (as well as the limited lines introduced with Intel processors), I've been leary of the first gen Intel Macs. This seems to confirm those fears.

The very fact that they keep referring to the the iMac as the "Intel iMac G5" discredits their "news", and what would make anyone think MacMall has any more inside info than any other Apple reseller?

This has to be the scariest rumor yet for those (like me) that have the Intel(NON G5 iMac). Are you stating that they told you that there would be no updates etc for this version of the iMac. That would them mean the bugs/issues and the ability to run native apps is gone.

This is dead wrong. They'll be releasing an update to their applications to allow them to run on intel macs. (NOT the same thing as releasing an update to the intel macs to allow them to run the applications, which isn't needed.) This goes for photoshop and final cut and anything else. The problem with photoshop is that the update wont be out for another year or so. When this update does come out, however, the applications will run natively without using rosetta on the iMacs that came out in January.

He admits that some of the terminology is incorrect. But in the end, he feels that MacMall was honest enough to suggest waiting and is appreciative of their candor. I guess we'll wait for March to find out!

I could see apple coming out with new versions of the software or something but I couldn't see them coming out with new iMac's next month.

i don't know what the original poster wants...an imac g5 or an intel imac. which is it?

and i agree - macmall has no insider info any more credible than, say, my grandmother's. sounds like a bunch of bull...

Your are very naive if you believe a single word of that post. Even looking past the incorrect terminology, there is no way Intel is producing new chips for Apple because the current Core Duo's aren't compatible. Apple has stated, however, that they will be releasing universal binaries of the pro apps in March, which may have been were this rumor started. While my Intel iMac doesn't scream with photoshop under rosetta, it definitely doesn't have "a ton of problems." And finally, there is no way Apple would leak its plan to some random dude at Macmall, this guy is total BS!

I strongly dislike ignorant people. Apple is simply release Universal Binaries for their Pro apps, not new iMacs. Ugh... people!

As far as the hardware problem this rumor is rambling about, totally bogus. If it were to happen, folks would be lining up for a refund or exchange. You can't sell aproduct, EOL it a month later, and not offer any support for it.

So why not buy an intel mac now?

I've purchased one for audio use and sure Pro Tools and Logic do not run on the system now, but will they eventually? Yes, and I'll have spent my $ on a faster machine. It's a patience thing. Plus for me, this was my first mac and I needed the time to get used to the OS and functions. (Garageband however already works..)

March is -SO FAR AWAY-.. seriously now.. and apple is not going to shoot all of it's new intel customers in the foot like that. that's terrible business strategy.

That's what the poster is implying. The macmall dude didn't realize that the only problem with iMacs now is that the pro apps aren't ready. When the pro apps are ready, they will run fine on the current Intel iMac. Buy away!

Do not buy an iMac G5 now because Final Cut and the other Apple Pro apps are going to run natively on the iMac Core Duo in March.

Because Final Cut and the other Apple Pro apps are going to run natively on the iMac G5 in March also. It's not like there'll be some problem running UB's on a G5.... it'll work just fine.

The reason you shouldn't buy is if you already own a lot of software that you really don't want to have to upgrade... then buy the G5 and it'll last you a couple years.

Then, it'll be time to upgrade your software and your hardware.. the transition will be over, and you'll avoid first gen problems.

Waiting till March will mean the new programs will run faster on your faster intel... but the old programs (ones that you already own) still won't run worth a damn or at all.

I'm not a pro at all.. but if I own a suite of FC and DVD Pro... that cost me, as a consumer, a LOT of money by my software price standards. The new intels will run slower with my existing software... the G5 iMac is as fast as its going to get. (as an AIO)
