So, neither of my 2009 MacMinis seem to like Memorex or Verbatim DL DVD +Rs... Has anyone else experienced this issues? If so, any solution? or just wait for a firmware update?

What happens when I put in either of the two above-mentioned DVDs: the MacMini seems to attempt to read it, then spits it back out after thirty seconds to a minute.

There will never be a firmware update unless there is a serious flaw.

The problem isn't with +R support.

Optical drive Slot-loading 8x SuperDrive with double-layer support (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)

OP, I have a similar issue. Neither my Mini nor my iMac like Memorex DL's. Any Verbatim created on my Mini gets spit out by my iMac. But discs from the iMac will open on the Mini. They both will open commercial discs so it is only ones they create. All this from a fresh install of OSX. I have resorted to sharing data across my network.

I take it the network solution means you weren't able to find a brand of DL's that worked?

Not working as advertised is a relatively serious flaw. In the case that it is simply a matter of brand (though I haven't found any that work yet), it would be nice of Apple to at least list one or two compatible brands in the KB for the Mini.

I have burned data to dual layer discs successfully on my 2009 Mac Mini (it has a Pioneer drive). So far I have used Memorex brand discs at 4x with apps like Toast 9.

Curiously, I have a recently acquired Pioneer internal IDE drive in an old ADS 5 1/4" firewire enclosure connected to my 2007 Mac Mini that *does* have a problem with dual layer discs. I've already wasted a few of them in this manner. I suspect the circuitry in the enclosure is failing in some way as I already swapped the drive. I am also testing the possibility that the long firewire cable I am using is faulty. I have switched to a 1 foot cable but not yet tested dual layer burns.

I haven't burned much yet, but my Verbatim DVD+R DL burned and works just fine.
