Just got this box, 16MB/1TB SSD, as such it works perfectly but there is one quirk I cant grasp (neither can Apple support after patient & good telephone support).

The mac mini runs 15.0.1 works perfect as such and connects fine via LAN to the internet.

The problem is that my iMac27"-5k (2017) runs 15.0.1 too and the Mac mini, will NOT see each other on my LAN. Both can see and connect to my macbook pro and my Macpro 5.1 and the NAS I use.

Would any of you recognize this quirk? I have tried safe mode and all the other stuff, but those two boxes are like two brats on the playground, ignoring to 'play' wit the other... (= because there ARE no other)

AT the very start after opening the box I connected the two units with a TB3 cable, but even after alle the correct steps, it was not possible to enter any username and PW...
kind regards

First of all, you have an Intel Mac Mini - not a M1 Mini if your OS is Catalina (10.15.1).
Second, M1 Mini come with Big Sur (11.0.1).
You should post your question on the Mac Mini or Catalina subforum for more answers.

Do you have any vlans or any kind of separate networks configured within your router?
Are both computers on the same subnet?

every mac is using expressvpn and are on same/the only LAN. I use Ubiquity units USG4 Pro and 16 port switch. every mac connects to 'all' devices. except the connection between iMac and Mac Mini

Problem gone away, if not solved! I am using Norton 360 on all my other Macs, never had any problem with inter-connecting. Somehow Norton 360 on the MacMini M1 is more sensitive. So I have stopped their firewall settings on all Macs and now the Mini "is playing with the other kids" so to speak. Later I will trim settings back as needed.

However this does not explain why my initial set up connecting the iMac and Mini with a TB3 cable failed when using Migration Assistant... anyway... If I try it out again later I'll post my findings here.

Do you really need Norton or other AV software?

Also, how are computer to computer connections handled? I would try disabling or uninstalling Norton on both machines and see if it works.

Relevant question, and you only know, once you have been hit because you did not install it. :) Anyway, I have trimmed the settings and the system as such works perfect now. Later, I have to decide if it is worth the maintenance work to keep it installed... a long time ago I used PC and windows, then it was needed ;-)

A long time ago it might have been worth it. But these days I don't run anything on my Windows computer beyond the Virus and threat protection that comes with Windows. It works well and has minimal impact on performance.

How much of a hit on your system resources does Norton have on a Mac ?

I know that where I work we don't install AV on Macs but do install Cisco's new algorithm protection on every PC though...

Cant really say, now that I removed it, but I never experienced any slack on performance, that I could connect to Norton (iMac 27", 4,2 GHz quad core, 48GB RAM, 1TB SSD)

can confirm this, things like norton is horrible for any computer system. and the same for Migration Assistant´s i prefer clean systems and manual setup/transfer.
