hello i have got a macmini 80 gb 10.6.8 with snow leopard and when i turn it on all i see is the wallpaper of the universe, any ideas please on how to get to the login screen?
i am using a windows keyboard.
thank you.

You have auto login enabled and I think there's a program causing the Finder not to launch.

Solution, hold the Shift key when you startup, it will safe boot, see if it gets you into your User account, then go to Users & Groups, click on Login Options and on the right side you'll see Automatic Login, set it to off.
Be aware, you should know your password, next time you restart it will show the login window.

Now, restart and login, did this work, if you still have problems restart again, then login but right after you login hold the Shift key, this will disable all Login Items.
Go back to the Users & Groups and go to login Items, look what is there, make a screenshot so you know what is there, then remove all programs, logout and in again.
Did this work?

i do not have auto login enabled as i always have to put my password in,i have put my installation disk in and held the c button but nothing happens, some one suggested windows key and alt and r and p at the same time but it did not work?
thank you.

Is the keyboard wireless, is it a windows keyboard (You say Windows key-there's none on Apple keyboard)?

If it is a wireless keyboard, right before startup press the Keyboard power button, it's known to give problems when starting up, and then the key combo you want.

it is a windows wireless keyboard?

The problem is as I told you above, I have a mini too, sometimes I want to boot into windows or the boot manager by holding the Option key, but just before I do I press the power button shortly, this way the keyboard wakes up, I am not the only one, it seems to affect more people, I do have the Apple keyboard though and it has a power button, don't know about yours, if you have a wired one connect that one, that should work.

ok thank you i think i have a wired keyboard in the loft and i will give it a try.

thank you for all the help,i have managed to get it to recognize the installation disk and i am in the process of re-installing the system.
