I am on my M1 Air on MacOS 12.3.1. This machine is usually hooked up to my LG UltraFine 24" for Mac.

Previous to this update, com.apple.WebKit.GPU (which I think was the former Safari Graphics and Media) on Activity Monitor used below 10% CPU even on 4K streaming with or without the monitor.

This is with or without extensions. Cleared cache and history. Replicated on Safe Mode and still the same.

Obviously 30% is not super high, but it is noticeable compared to what it was before. And it is consistent, staying around ~30% throughout the video.

Under the Develop menu, I turned off the VP9 codec, which allowed strictly 1080p and WebKit.GPU stayed < 5-10% of the CPU [which makes sense].

The video playing at the same time of this screenshot is:

Has anyone else noticed that? This holds true for any 4k Video on YouTube that uses the VP9 codec.

It is basically using the same amount of battery that Chrome [from the sum of the renderer + GPU + VTDecoderXPCService] is using as seen below:

I noticed about that. I don't know about VP9, but I did noticed that Safari seems to consume more battery than pervious and makes my MacBook Pro heater.
BTW, my MacBook Pro(Intel) consume more battery in 12.3/12.3.1

Indeed interesting. Wonder how Apple did this.
