macOS 12.3 Safari: press Tab key to type in address bar doesn’t work

When I open a new tab or a new window in Safari, I had the habit to press the Tab key on my keyboard, which would select the Address bar so I could immediately start typing in the address bar.

Since updating to macOS 12.3, that doesn’t seem to work anymore; I have to use my mouse to click on the address bar before I can start typing.

Anyone else having this issue?

I've never had to press the Tab key. The cursor is already in the address bar whenever I open a new tab or window. Seems to work whether I use the Separate or Compact layout. I also use the keyboard shortcut Command+L to put the cursor in the address bar when I don't want to open a new tab or window.

Are you using a browser extension that might be interfering with it when opening a new tab/window?

Thanks, I think I should have clarified I chose to open new windows and tabs with “Homepage” in the Safari preferences. If I choose to open them with “Start Page” or with “Empty Page” instead, Safari behaves as you describe it.

Thanks for sharing the Command-L shortcut, I didn’t know about that.

I don’t use browser extensions in Safari so that one isn’t the problem. The change might also have been intentional of course.
