Trying to upgrade to Catalina on a mid-2104 MBP and get the following error:

"macOS could not be installed on your computer
Storage system verify or repair failed"

I've tried installing through Software Update and the App Store, as well as resetting NVRAM, all of which lead to the same error.

I have plenty of free hard drive space.

When I try downloading directly from Apple, I'm told I need Catalina to update to 10.15.1.

When I try Disk Utility First Aid, I get “First Aid process has failed. If possible back up the data on this volume.”

Any other ideas?

Hmm, yes, I do have a backup - is there a way to fix a corrupt drive? What should I do?
If you have a good reliable backup, then your fix is to reformat the disk, do a clean installation of the operating system, then restore your data.
