MacOS - how do I get a folder to show me its contents in a grid?

For a folder of photos my favourite layout in Windows is large icons in a grid. On my Mac running Big Sur when I select icon view, it just shows them in a vertical list which seems ridiculously space-inefficient, see below... how do I get them to show in a grid?

Not on Big Sur here but try command-J and picking something in the "Sort By:" drop-down list.
