MacOS Mail - wrong quotation marks

This is a weird one. I'm using "smart quotes" (aka curled quotes) in Mail, as in other apps -- as I have for years. Suddenly under Mojave, I find that in Mail the opening quotation mark is coming in curled in the wrong direction, like this:



You can see in Pages on the left the way it should look, and for whatever insane reason, Mail is now mangling these.

Anybody else seeing this by any chance?

Have never bothered with them in the past, but just for fun tried them and they seem to be working on my “macpro3,1 running 10.14.2”

have you tried changing it, then changing it back? have you rebooted? it's working fine here...

Yeah, I toggled it. It's one of the standard things under "Text Substitutions". I'll try rebooting though I'm not super optimistic.
