macOs12 Preview - when quitting Preview with a bunch of open files it should reopen with those same files open again ...
which it mostly does, until it does not...

(Checkbox “Close windows when quitting an app” in systempref/general is unchecked)

this is on one machine....

on another, Preview does never open any of the last open files,
and weirdly, cmd-q does consistently work only at the second time...
(these two things seem to occur only when more than one file is open...)

'defaults write com.apple.Preview NSQuitAlwaysKeepsWindows -bool true'
and
defaults write com.apple.Preview ApplePersistenceIgnoreState NO
make no difference.

anybody know what is going wrong?

Not sure. Works for me on macOS 12.6. So to be sure I'm understanding you you're saying:

Mac # 1:
  • sometimes when you launch Preview it doesn't open the previously open files, but most of the time it does
Mac # 2:
  • Preview NEVER opens the files that were open when you last quit if you had more than one open
  • You have to press cmd-q twice to get Preview to quit if you have more than one file open
Is that correct? On Mac # 2, what happens if you quit using the menu (Preview > Quit Preview)?

yes, you understood me perfectly :) sry english is not my first language

'On Mac # 2, what happens if you quit using the menu (Preview > Quit Preview)?'
-> same thing, got to do it twice to get the expected reaction...

Thanks for confirming. Have you already tried rebooting your Macs? If you leave yours on 24/7 like I do, sometimes it's easy to forget that simple diagnostic step 😉

Aside from that, I'm not sure what else you can do except re-install macOS. You have the proper option checked in System Preferences, yet Preview is "ignoring" that for some reason.

thanks for clarifying :)

yes, restarting first the software, then the system is the first thing I tend to try...

alas, since macOS has in the past few years become much like winblows, an OS that slowly degrades and destroys itself over time... becoming like a flickering light or some other crappy, old machine with lots of loose contacts :(
