Hello all.

Just received my new 14-inch MBP M1 and I need to go boot into MacOS recovery mode in case I need to reinstall the MacOS and set a firmware password.

Some sources say the it’s Command + R key for Intel based while booting and some say to just hold down the power key while booting on M1s.

I’m confused.

On the M1 MacBook Pros, which key commands to use to boot into recovery mode to set a firmware password or in case reinstalling the MacOS?

Both sources are right. As outlined here, it does appear to be the power button with your Apple silicon mac. And these are the available options when in macOS Recovery.

Command + R (as well as the Internet-based Command + Option + R and Command + Option + Shift + R) is for Intel based Macs. Pressing and holding the power button is for Apple Silicon based Macs. Firmware passwords don't exist for Apple Silicon Macs, however, you can use MDM software to set a passcode to block entering the recovery environment, if so desired. But that is only available via MDM. Firmware passwords as you knew them on Intel Macs are not a thing on Apple Silicon Macs.
