MacOS Screenshot Extra Space

Hello there,
I have noticed that when I take a screenshot on my Macbook there is a periferical extra space that has nothing. It's like a .png extra space but still makes the image bigger. Please, could anybody help?

SWITCH TO Apowersoft Screen Shot. Its a free app on the App Store. It will give you lots more options. I used to use the apple screen shot, but this is so much better.

If you're using the CMD+Shift+4+Space click shortcut the space around the window is the drop shadow I believe. MacOS for whatever reason includes it in the PNG when you screen shot a window. I guess it makes it look pretty or something but if you just click and drag manually it won't have any space other than what you selected. Or the whole screen will be the proper resolution too.

This is even more complicated on the rMBP if you have the scaling changed, you can screenshot a window and the resulting file can be larger than your physical screen due to it running at a higher res the downscaling to fit the screen. Kinda goofy stuff.

Yes, that's it. That shadow and extra space that is useless. How could I get rid of it?

CMD+Shift+4 then press Spacebar, now hold ALT(Option) for the one window without shadow.

Also - play around with CMD+Shift+4 and hold down ALT for a proportional area snap.

You can also permanently remove the shadow, just type these commands in the app, Terminal.

Turn off shadows:
defaults write com.apple.screencapture disable-shadow -bool true
killall SystemUIServer

Turn shadows back on:
defaults write com.apple.screencapture disable-shadow -bool false
killall SystemUIServer
