Hi guys,

So in the past the update procedure was the following:
- Download update —> Automatic reboot —> The black screens with the white Apple logo and the loading bars —> Sign-in screen

Since a while the behavior is kind of strange:
- Download update —> Automatic reboot —> Loading screens —> Then my MacBook Pro just turns off —> When I manually reboot it, the sign-in screen comes up —> When I try to sign in it loads for a few minutes —> Automatic reboot —> Loading screens —> Sign-in screen for the 2nd time but this time I can properly sign in

Is this behavior normal?

Thanks in advance

The behaviour changed slightly with the release of macOS Big Sur. Depending on what version you were on before, it could be updating many things including firmware or recovery partitions. The time it takes varies, but you'll know when it is done.

Ok 👌 But I already encountered this strange behavior in older macOS versions (prior to Big Sur, I don’t know when exactly it changed). It’s just a bit strange that I see e. g. the log-in screen twice (and the first time after trying to log in it takes some minutes and then reboots again 🤔).

Yes, the process has been evolving since Yosemite with each release of macOS. Pre-Yosemite, updates were simple and quick. It would be nice to just have it not show the login screens to confuse some users during the update process, but they haven't seemed to put much effort into the aesthetics of this. It would also be nice if it lived up to the hype of being quicker that they keep claiming but never delivering on.

Let's go back a bit further. –Download discreet update (app update, security update, etc.) ⇒ update applied (reboots are RARE) ⇒ continue using your computer

So my father just updated his MacBook and there the process was still „normal“. Download update —> Reboot with loading bars —> Done. Hm, don’t know why this isn’t the case for my computer.
