Personally I'd just buy this.

The current cards aren't that new. They were released with the Mac Pro 2010 update. That is the cheaper one. I've noticed people on here have gotten some non standard cards to work. You could do a forum search to look into this.

Bleck perhaps I should take that back. There are apparently complaints with that combination on this forum. Use the search function though. GPU replacement is a big topic.

Edit: I sort of defaulted to it because it seems to be the card of choice among those with Mac Pro 1,1 models. I don't know what compatibility is like on the 5870. I know it's expensive for what you're getting at this point.

Take yer pick.

I have a Mac Pro 2008 Octo 2.8, the following cards have all run fine in it:
ATI HD2600XT 256 MB running on Leopard.
Nvidia 8800GT 512 MB running on Leopard.
Sapphire HD4870 Vapor-X 1 GB (Flashed PC card) running on Leopard and Snow Leopard.
Sapphire HD5870 Vapor-X 1 GB (Flashed PC card) running on Snow Leopard.

The following seller will provide you with a pre flashed card for your machine:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/macvidcards/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686
Another 8000GT, GTX285, HD4870 or 6870 are all economic replacements there. $175-$300 is not bad at all.

Choose one. Job done. Try not to be a tight ass with the spend as buck makes for bang. ;)

Oh yeah and go get some more RAM while you have your wallet out. 2 GB is strangling your CPU's performance.
Another 4 GB for $96 bargain! http://www.memoryamerica.com/fk225672800at.html

16 GB makes mine fly well for an old bird: https://novabench.com/view/201067 :D

thank you! some dont run lion?

yeah my ram suck! i need more, actually i see in new egg 8gb for $200, your link is even more cheaper, I was thinking if buy all stuff, new video card (i need it for fix) more ram, and a ssd hd... OR sell it and see if apple release a new one or buy an imac mmm

Lion is optional for some mandatory for others.

The 6870 prefers Lion but with some tweaking most of the cards will run in Snow Leopard.
I can't comment on Lion really as I don't use it. Still using Rosetta so it is a no go atm.
The nice people over at Netkas.org know all about it.
